Pretty obvious that Israel was responsible for the terrorist attack that sabotaged Iran’s nuclear facility in Natanz on Sunday. The explosion took place, “below more than 20 feet of reinforced concrete, which destroyed the power supply that keeps the centrifuges spinning at supersonic speeds, enriching uranium” according to the NYT.
The Israelis clearly want Iran to know it was them. Just yesterday, former Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said, “what happened two days ago in Natanz wasn’t caused by someone who broke in there in the middle of the night. The explosives were planted there in advance, maybe 10 or 15 years ago”.
Olmert also said, “I can think of operations that were carried out in the past to plant devices”, which should prompt anyone to glance sideways at the Beirut blasts in Aug 2020. And according to the IDF Chief of General Staff Aviv Kochavi, “the IDF’s operations in the Middle East are not hidden from the eyes of the enemy”.
According to Iran’s FM Javed Zarif, “Israel played a very bad gamble if it thought that the attack will weaken Iran’s hand in the nuclear talks”, arguing that, “on the contrary, it will strengthen our position”. The political opposition in Iran aren’t buying it. The ‘principalists’ (or ‘hardliners’ in the Western press), are blaming treason or infiltration. Either way they want control over the Iranian nuclear program to be transferred from the FM to the Supreme leadership.
The US position is that they were not involved, suggesting therefore that Israel acted alone. That said, it’s worth noting that under Obama, the US was developing a plan, code-named ‘Nitro Zeus’, to carry out cyberattacks “to disable Iran’s air defenses, communications systems and crucial parts of its power grid”.
The Iranian FM Javed Zarif rightly called it “Israeli terrorism”. He said, “deliberate targeting of a safeguarded nuclear facility – with high risk of indiscriminate release of radioactive material – is nuclear terrorism and a war crime”. But in our media, there’s no sense that another Fukushima could have happened because of Israel’s terrorist actions, and that’s because Israel is always portrayed as the victim.
According to Netanyahu, “I will never allow Iran to obtain the nuclear capability to carry out its genocidal goal of eliminating Israel, and Israel will continue to defend itself against Iran’s aggression, and terrorism”. The paranoia that Iran is building a bomb allows Israel to conceal their real intention of simply preventing Iran from developing nuclear energy.
If Iran goes nuclear, it would free up Iranian oil for export, which would be a good thing for countries like India and China that are net-importers of oil. Therefore, by sabotaging Iran’s march to nuclear energy, Israel is undermining the interests of India and China. This angle must be hammered home to at least restrain Israel.
Ultimately, Israel feels insecure because it was founded on theft, and so the only way to feel less insecure is to destroy all its neighbours that refuse to sell Palestine.
